'I'm a cyclist and entitled drivers do one thing that we hate'

Send Push

A cyclist has blasted "entitled" drivers for a recurring "selfish" blunder "every time" he heads out for a ride, reaching boiling point when once again another motorist seemed to have barricaded the lane by parking across it. Taking to , the irate rider voiced his exasperation, saying: "I'm sick to death of cars parking on cycle lanes. This happens each and every time I ride."

A photograph shared shows a brazen red car not only intruding on the cycle lane. but also perched on double yellow lines. It's left many online viewers startled at the driver's brazen assumption that this was acceptable.

Another image in the series captures two additional vehicles impeding the cycle path, plunging numerous road users into sheer amazement. In response, one individual chipped in, sharing their own infuriating encounter: "As a bonus I got a driver blocking a permanent bike line shout at me for trying to use the lane. Just today. They simply don't care about anyone but themselves."

A second recounted a frightening experience, saying: "I had a driver chase me with his car just because I went around him while he was parked in a segregated bike lane. Some drivers are nuts. Sadly they can do whatever they want."

A third also wrote: "Drives me nuts. What's the point in having a dedicated lane if I have to go into the road every 20 seconds anyway?"

Meanwhile, another shared a different opinion, commenting: "Isn't it a shame that people don't consider others? People parking in cycle lanes really inconveniences cyclists.

"As a pedestrian, I'm inconvenienced and often put in danger by cyclists cycling on pavements, in pedestrian-only areas, ignoring red lights, ignoring pedestrian crossings etc.

"But, that's life, and I adjust my actions accordingly. I guess cyclists will have to do the same in this case."

Some people voiced that parking in cycle lanes can make people look "entitled". A number of people mentioned drivers often claim they'll be "just a minute", which to many is still not excusable, leaving cyclists outraged over the recurrent issue.

When it comes to parking in cycle lanes, the rules are quite clear - it's generally illegal, especially in those with solid white lines, which denote mandatory cycle lanes. The Highway Code explicitly states that drivers cannot drive or park in these lanes.

On the flip side, advisory cycle lanes, marked with broken white lines, may sometimes allow parking but, even in these cases, drivers are urged not to do so unless unavoidable. Furthermore, the presence of any waiting or parking restrictions, like yellow lines, means parking isn't permitted at all, regardless of whether the cycle lane is designated by a dashed line, as per the Highway Code.

Local authorities have the power to deploy CCTV and authorised cameras to enforce these regulations and can dish out Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) to drivers who illegitimately park.

The Transport for London website states: "Cycle lanes are listed in The Highway Code and are not unique to TfL red routes. They are separated from general traffic by a white solid or dashed line."

"Sometimes the cycle lane will be a different colour from the rest of the road. The start of a cycle lane is marked by a sign at the roadside and markings on the road surface.

"Only pedal cycles and rental electric scooters can use cycle lanes. To make roads safer for cyclists, all other road users, including motorcycles and other types of scooters, may not use cycle lanes."
